Bambino Mio. Probably the most well known cloth nappy brand in the UK. Even if you didn’t know the name you’ve likely seen their nappies on UK supermarket shelves. The nappy you’ve probably seen, maybe even used was the Mio Solo. Quick drying, reasonably prices, easy to fit and velcro fastening which made it very like a disposable nappy and great for beginners to the cloth nappy world. A gateway nappy as I always saw it. However with just one microfiber insert it often needed boosting.
But Bambino Mio have something new up their sleeves and that comes in the form of their new Supreme nappy. This nappy, made of bamboo with a double insert sown in is one of the most absorbent reusables diapers on the market, all the while keeping it’s easy to use gateway status.
Pros and Cons of the Bambino Mio Supreme Nappy.
Pros.
It’s super absorbent. Unlike their original Mio Solo nappy which has one sown in insert made from microfiber (the least absorbent material used in cloth nappies) which meant you often needed to add an extra booster, the Supreme has two inserts, both made of bamboo. This makes it by far the most absorbent nappy I own.
Easy to fit. Just like a disposable. With many cloth nappies you need to get your head around fitting them slightly differently to a disposable otherwise risking leaks. Bambino Mio’s nappies however has never needed this. So weather you’ve never used a cloth nappy before, your sending them to childcare, wrestling a back flipping toddler or trying to do them up standing on your head, you’ll be just fine getting these on.
A Double Gusset. The holey grail of anti poo explosions is the double gusset. These are an extra elastic around babies legs that have never and I repeat NEVER let me down. Those up the back, out the side poo leaks you get with disposable just don’t happen with cloth nappies and the double gusset gives even more protection against this. No poopy outfit changes for us thanks.
All In One. Now this could be a pro or a con. It’s a pro because everything is together, especially great for beginners but all in one’s do take longer to dry.
One Size. The nappy has poppers on the front to grow with your baby. This is a very nicely sized nappy. Their original Mio Solo’s still fit my very tall daughter until she potty trained at 2 1/2, and the supreme seems slightly more roomy.
Cute Prints. Obviously it’s not all about aesthetics but who am I kidding, has anyone ever brought a nappy that they didn’t think was super pretty or cute? Asking for a friend.
Cons.
Velcro. It’s personal but I am just not a fan of velcro. It’s great in some cases, like when sending to childcare or grandparents because poppers can be daunting to a newbie but I just find velcro doesn’t have the same life span as poppers. I also find they if your not careful velcro can rub on baby. It’s not really a problem just make sure the tabs are positioned so they don’t rub but it’s something to be mindful about. Also babies can open velcro by themselves, especially my cheeky one year old. If it’s a hot day with just a nappy in the garden I wouldn’t be reaching for these. The trousers go straight on when velcro is in the mix.
Take a long time to dry. Hey we can’t have everything. You want more absorbency you have to expect that it’s therefore going to take longer to dry. In the sunshine it’s no problem, they will dry outside in a day, but in this colder autumn days when it’s not quiet cold enough for the heating to be on their taking more like two and a half day to dry.
My tips is to get them hanging up high, somewhere with lots of airflow, if you can’t do that turn them every so often to make sure all sides dry evenly.
Their bulky. With two large inserts making this nappy very absorbent, it does also make the nappy rather bulky. However I have no problem with this and want to reassure you that there is nothing wrong with a big bottom. A big cushioned bottom is a good bit of padding when their learning to walk and keep falling over.
If your ever worried about the bulk of cloth nappies and weather it affects their movement, fear not and have a read of “Do Cloth Nappies Affect Crawling and Walking, or cause bow legs?”
Do I need to wash my Bambino Mio cloth nappy before use?
Yes I would wash any new cloth nappy before use but especially nappies like the Supreme that is made from bamboo as bamboo will take a few washes to get to full absorbency.
To get the bamboo in your nappy to full absorbency you have a few options. Wash it serval times (no need to dry in-between washes) or soak it in a bucket/bath overnight. Alternatively you could just wash it once but be mindful that it won’t be as absorbent straight away, so change it slightly sooner than you normally would for the first few uses.
How to wash my Bambino Mio Supreme Nappy.
Wash your supreme nappy in the same way you would wash all of your cloth nappies. If your just starting out and haven’t got a wash routine yet or have no idea where to start head over to “How to Wash Cloth Nappies. 6 steps to success.”
As for drying, they may take a little longer to dry but don’t be tempted to tumble dry. This could affect the waterproof PUL layer of your nappy and deem them useless.
Will the Bambino Mio Supreme Nappy fit a newborn?
The supreme nappy won’t fit a newborn. They do say from 8+ lbs but in my experience I have found 10-12 lbs more realistic. They will seem huge on a baby of even 12lbs but that’s fine. As long as you can get a nice snugg fit around babies legs they won’t leak.
If your looking for something to fit a smaller baby Bambino Mio’s Duo Nappy is a much better option for a newborn. Or have a read of “Cloth Nappies for Newborns. Everything you need to know.”
Summary.
Overall I really like the Supreme nappy and would definately recommend buying it. It’s soft on babies skin, lasts a long time and holds all explosions in. What’s not to love. Also it looks super cute.
How many cloth nappies will you need to go full time and ditch the disposables for good?
