Buy a plant instead of flowers.

A plant will last in the home for months if not years after flowers die. Or a plant for the garden. I brought a Rose bush for my Mum to plant at her allotment a few years ago from David Austin. I picked the Gertrude Jekyll variety as they are great for cut flowers. It’s like that old saying, “Give a man a fish he’ll eat for a day. Teach him to fish, you’ll feed him for a life time.” Bit of an extreme comparison I’ll admit but this way she can have cut flowers on her table several times a year from you, without you having to keep buying.

Buy local flowers.

If your still keen to bring a bunch on flowers round next Sunday why not buy locally? I live in England and I have to say the Tulips and Daffodils in March are so lovely. Your local Green Grocers or market will no doubt stock them. If you get them from a supermarket just making sure their British grown.

Bake her a cake.

Tea and cake on mothers day. Or champagne? Whatever your choice everyone loves a homemade cake. If your stuck for ideas and want something fancy this Lemon and Blueberry Cheesecake Cake is like Spring on a plate. Or something simpler and still spring/summer like this Lemon Elderflower Recipe is yum and bound to get your Mum’s taste buds excited for the warmer days to come.

Make her a Jam or Preserve.

Pinterest in like Jam heaven and there’s so many ideas to get you started with something simple. This Homemade Jam and Jelly article has 20 great ideas.

Make it extra special.

Add some like leaf printing to the top of your Jam Jar to really impress or onto some card for an extra special homemade card. There’s ton of great tutorials on good old Pinterest too, like this one.

Homemade drinks.

On the homemade note it couldn’t be easier to make a little tipple for you Mum. You’ve probably got some old spirits in the cupboard you don’t drink very often.

Here’s some of my favorites.

7 of the best homemade gins.

Damson or Sloe Gin.

Elder-flower Gin

Strawberry Vodka

Raspberry Vodka

Don’t feel you need to make an entire urn like some recipes give the measurements for. For Christmas every year one of my partners colleagues gives out small jam pots with fruit and gin in. Its the perfect amount for a few drinks at Christmas and is a lovely gift.

Cook a meal.

There’s nothing nicer than sitting around a table with the whole family. I can promise you most Mum’s want nothing more.

Ask her if there’s something she really wants or needs.

My Mum was after some new gardening gloves. It sounds boring but we had a lovely day looking around a shop and she saw some she liked, so I got them for her. Simple as that but greatly appreciated.

Just be together.

Since I started striving to live a less wasteful more minimal lifestyle I’ve come to realize that the stuff just doesn’t really matter. What matters is a little thought and effort. Whether that be making something, buying something important or just taking the time to do something together. No rushing to get somewhere, no panic buying a bunch of flowers from the garage “that will have to do”. Just a little time spent together goes a long way.

So enjoy your mothers day whatever you may be doing.
